2017 Image Competition Judges
Jury Chair - Mark Sweeney
Mark's Photographic career started in high school as a staff photographer for The Elkhart Truth and South Bend Tribune newspapers in Northern Indiana where he photographed sporting events, feature stories and spot news.
After high school he attended Rhode Island School of Photography, then worked for a few studios and labs in Massachusetts before starting his own business. For the past 20 years Mark has been in Clifton Park, New York photographing weddings, portraits and corporate events.
Mark holds the Master of Photography and Photographic Craftsman Degrees from PPA. In 2015 he received PPA’s Imaging Excellence Award and in 2017 received a Top 10 Illustrative Grand Imaging Award.
He is a recipient of Court of Honor Awards from PPANE, PPSNYS, PPAM, PPARI and multiple Photographer of the Year Awards from PPA.
Mark is actively involved in PPA and is a past president of Capital-Champlain Section of PPSNYS.
Judge - Ella Putney Carlson
Ella Putney Carlson grew up in Massachusetts, and began taking photographs at the age of seven after her older sister gave her a used box camera. She worked as a photojournalist, a studio photographer, and continues to work as a fine art photographer and photographic educator. Carlson has a master of fine arts degree from the New Hampshire Institute of Art and has earned professional photography degrees including Master Photographer, Master Artist, and Educational Associate. She has won numerous photography awards including top photographer awards in two states, Imaging Excellence awards from Professional Photographers of America, Kodak Gallery Awards and Fuji Masterpiece Awards.
Carlson disassembles and reassembles her original captures of familiar subjects. In this exhibit, she has focused on tea and flowers. She investigates hundreds of ways in which each of the objects can be viewed, enhanced, painted and manipulated and thereby challenging the viewer to see the objects in a new way.
Carlson’s art has been exhibited widely, including the Danforth Museum, DeCordova Museum, the Wren Gallery, Artistree Community Arts Center and Gallery, Vermont Center for Photography, Arts League of Lowell (MA), the New Hampshire Institute of Art, Cove Gallery (Gloucester, MA), the Professional Photographers of America International Exhibitions, the American Society of Photographers. Her work has been published in several editions of the Professional Photographers of America Loan Book, PPA Showcase Book, and Professional Photographer Magazine. Her book on Fine Art Photoshop will be published in 2017. She teaches photographic imaging at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell.
Judge - Kristy Steeves
Kristy Steeves graduated from Indiana University with a double major in journalism and political science. While in college she took two photojournalism classes and absolutely loved it. Despite her love for photography she pursued her goal of becoming a news reporter. She worked as a television journalist for 25 years. During that time she won four prestigious Emmy Awards for her creative storytelling, including news reports on a 9/11 rescue team at the World Trade Center, an in depth look at the life of drug dealers, and a police SWAT team drill competition. Her love of photography eventually lured her away from television. In 2009 she made a life changing decision and switched careers. Now, instead of being in front of the camera, she is behind one.
Kristy is a Master Photographer and a Certified Professional Photographer. She specializes in studio portraits and weddings. In November, 2016, Kristy won first place awards at the state competition in Ohio for having the highest scores in both the children portrait category and the general portrait category. In 2015, she won the J. Anthony Bill Award for having the most outstanding portrait in the state of Ohio. She has also been an Ohio Top 10 Photographer. She has been a Gold Medalist at the
International Print Competition and a Kodak Gallery award recipient at the Northeast District Competition.
Kristy is a member of the Akron Society of Professional Photographers, Professional Photographers of Ohio and Professional Photographers of America.
Judge - Darrell Moll
Darrell Moll M. Photog. Cr API CPP of Moll Photography in Norwalk Oh, is a Past President of the Professional Photographer's of Ohio, was their Photographer of the Year 3 times, and was runner-up on 2 more occasions. He was the first PPA North East District Photographer of the Year in 2011 and repeated this in 2012 He has been awarded the ASP District and Regional Medallion 4 times and is a 6 time winner of the ASP Elite Award. He was also awarded the PPA Certified Award 6 consecutive years and received the coveted PPA Imaging Excellence Award in 2012. In 2013 he had the distinction of having 2 prints in the top ten of the GIA. Darrell became an approved PPA juror in 2010.
Judge - Mark Stevens
Mark started with photography as a way to relax, to slow down, and to see the world in a new way. He enjoys capturing the world around him, whether he is close to home, or traveling around the country. With more time after he retired in 2007, he started to experiment with new techniques, different cameras, and digital software. He is generous in sharing his knowledge with other photographers. His participation in several organizations, including Professional Photographers of America, has challenged his skills and let him develop in new ways.
Mark's success in image competition includes: NHPPA 2014, 2015, and 2016 photographer of the year, and PPA's IPC platinum photographer of the year in 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016. Mark also has a Grand Imaging Award, a Kodak Gallery Award, and a Fuji Masterpiece award to his credit.
